Sofa buying guide

Sofas are often considered to be the heart of your home, it’s where we spend time with loved ones and relax at the end of a long day. The right sofa will complete your room and last you for many years to come, which is why it requires an extra bit of time to research your options, making sure it is the perfect match for you and your lifestyle.

But, at House of Fraser – Sofas, Furniture and Flooring we’ve done the hard work for you with our comprehensive sofa buying guide. Below you can find all the information you need… What size sofa should you choose? What material is right for you? Do you want a recliner? We hope to answer all of your burning questions. The guide also covers the delivery and installation process, as well as how to keep your new arrival in pristine condition.

Measure up

Before you start to look at different styles and designs of sofas, it’s vital that you measure the space where your new sofa will be positioned. There is nothing worse than discovering your dream sofa won’t fit into your home and having to start the search all over again.

The measuring process might seem tricky, but it is actually pretty simple. Take measurements of where your new sofa will be placed, also taking into consideration the amount of legroom between your sofa and other pieces of furniture. Don’t forget to take note of the height and width of any doorways, hallways or staircases your sofa will have to fit through on delivery.

Top Tip It can be difficult to visualise how your new sofa will fit into your home, but with a few sheets of newspaper you can map out the size of your sofa and see exactly how much space it will take up.

When you view any sofa on our website, you will find a full breakdown of all the dimensions you will need including height (A), width (B), depth (C), seat height (E), seat depth (F) and arm height (G). Armed with your measurements, you can start to look at the huge range of styles and sizes available to find the ultimate sofa for your home.

If you live in a top floor apartment, or have narrow access to your home/spiral staircases, let us know right away so our delivery and installation team can arrive prepared.

Our expert delivery and installation team have tried and tested handling techniques to get many large sofas into the home, but it’s always best to judge the size and shape of your new sofa against the one you currently have.

Sofa Dimensions Explained
Top Tip Before buying a new sofa, we would always recommend finding out how it is assembled. Many of our sofas have a split base which means it will be delivered in individual pieces, ideal for those with access problems. For sofas with a single piece construction, always ensure that it can fit through any door or windows, hallways or staircases before placing your order.
Choosing the ideal sofa for your home

After you have taken measurements for your new sofa, now comes the fun part of browsing the huge range of styles available and determining which type of sofa is best suited to your lifestyle. Choose from four seater sofas, three seater, and two seater sofas in a range of classic and contemporary designs.

For larger, open plan living spaces we also have a wide range of spacious corner sofas that are ideal as a room divider. Frequently have friends staying over? No problem, our stylish range of sofa beds are the perfect solution so nobody is left sleeping on the floor. Staying in is often considered the new going out and with our range of reclining sofas, complete with manual or power recliner action, you can put your feet up and relax with your favourite box set.

Top Tip Reclining sofas require an extra bit of space so you can stretch out and relax fully. But, don’t panic this is only a couple of inches behind and in front of the sofa, which can easily be taken into account when measuring.
Extra support and comfort

Many of our sofas feature foam seat interiors as standard, or offer a foam seat upgrade which is perfect if you require extra support and TLC from your sofa. Unlike fibre filled seats which are soft and squashy, foam seat interiors provide additional support and a firmer seat.

Look out for sofas with fixed, high back cushions which also help provide extra support for your neck and back. We also have a wide range of sofas available with stylish scatter back cushions, which not only do they finish off your sofa, but they are perfect for sinking into!

Find the most comfortable seating position for you with our wide range of manual and power recliner and chairs, which offer adjustable seating mechanisms.

At House of Fraser – Sofas, Furniture and Flooring, we also offer a range of specialist elevate chairs which provide complete body support for people who require an extra helping hand when standing up. If your personal circumstances allow, these may be purchased VAT free – for more information please contact our personal shopping team or visit your nearest House of Fraser – Sofas, Furniture and Flooring store to speak with our experts.

Fabric or leather?

After looking at the different styles and designs of sofas available, there are a few things to take into consideration before you make your final choice. How often will it be used? Do you have any small children or pets, and the biggest factor, what will your new sofa be used for the most? All of these things can help to determine whether a fabric or leather sofa will work best for your lifestyle.

Leather sofas are an increasingly popular choice; they are durable and easy-to-clean making them a great choice for busy homes. With a range of leather styles available, there’s something for every taste.

Fabric sofas offer a huge range of choice with different colours, textures and patterns available to create a stylish focal point. Offering plenty of warmth and a tactile touch, many of our fabric sofas come with fibre filled seat interiors as standard, and the option of foam seat upgrades, with additional scatter cushions so you are guaranteed plenty of comfort and support.

Top Tip To help find the perfect sofa for you, find a sofa or chair that you already own, sit down and measure the distance from the inside of your knee to where your lower back connects with the sofa. This will help you find sofas or chairs with a similar depth and ensure a cosy sit!
